Unveiling Our History
The crowd collectively gasped when KOCA unveiled the traveling mural “Paredes Hablando” by Stevon Lucero depicting the Latino history of Wyoming. Gathered in Laramie, Wyoming the audience ranged from small babies to seniors and were personally aware of much of their personal history – but seeing it reflected back as an art piece – was truly special and for many, emotional.
The day started with a hearty meal of home-made posole served by the numerous KOCA volunteers. Local artists and merchants had donated items that tempted you to participate in the silent auction while you waited for the unveiling ceremony. The artist spoke about his inspiration, people recounted their personal stories and then the moment came when all the hard work of the Mural Committee was revealed. Hundreds of years of Latino history and the story of their role in shaping Wyoming were recounted on canvas. And people truly appreciated it. So many flashing cameras, so many pictures of individuals or whole families standing in front of the mural. May 1, 2010 is a day that will surely be remembered in Wyoming history.
The mural now travels to various sites to become part of functions throughout the state and generates revenue for KOCA and recognition for Latinos in Wyoming.
